Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

What is it?

Lasting Power of Attorney is the legal document that enables someone you trust to look after your money in your bank accounts, ISA’s, investments, selling your home or even simply paying the day to day bills.

You may be a business owner and wish to appointment someone to run your business.

You may want someone to look after your Personal Welfare, which can include, where you are going to live, what sort of medical treatment you will receive and what type of care you will receive.

Many people think that an LPA is something that you only have in place should you ever lose your Mental Capacity. This is not the case as over the years we have also visited patients in local hospitals, residential care homes and those still living in their own home, to assist with the preparation of LPAs after they’ve suffered a stroke.

So what is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A LPA is a powerful legal document that safeguards a person’s wishes in the event they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves, due to accident or illness such as dementia.

The report highlighted that 44% of people have a will in place but only 12% have some form of LPA. A Will manages your affairs after death, whereas the LPA enables friends and family members that you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to make them yourself.
